Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Ukrainian center-back Illja Zabarnyi from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth, in what marks one of the most surprising and strategic moves of the 2025 summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old defender has signed a five-year contract with the French champions, keeping him at the Parc des Princes until June 2030. According to reports, PSG paid a fee in the region of €40 million, making Zabarnyi one of the most expensive Ukrainian defenders in history.

Defensive Reinforcement for Luis Enrique

Zabarnyi’s arrival comes as PSG seek to bolster their defensive line after the departures and aging of key players. Head coach Luis Enrique has been looking for young, composed defenders with international experience—and Zabarnyi fits that profile perfectly.

Having already earned 30+ caps for Ukraine’s national team, despite his young age, Zabarnyi is known for his tactical intelligence, calmness under pressure, and strong aerial presence. Standing at 1.89 meters, he combines physicality with excellent ball-playing ability, making him ideal for PSG’s possession-based style.

From Kyiv to Paris: A Meteoric Rise

Illja Zabarnyi began his professional career at Dynamo Kyiv, where he quickly emerged as one of the brightest defensive talents in Eastern Europe. After impressing in the Ukrainian Premier League and UEFA competitions, he moved to AFC Bournemouth in January 2023.

Despite Bournemouth’s status as a mid-table Premier League club, Zabarnyi’s performances consistently stood out. His maturity, leadership, and consistency attracted attention from several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich and Juventus—but PSG ultimately won the race.

Zabarnyi’s First Words as a PSG Player

In his first official statement as a PSG player, Zabarnyi said:

“It is a dream to join a club like Paris Saint-Germain. I am ready for this new challenge and proud to be part of such an ambitious project. I look forward to giving everything on the pitch for the fans and to help the team win trophies.”

What PSG Fans Can Expect

Zabarnyi joins a growing list of young talents recruited by PSG in recent windows, signaling a shift toward building a long-term, sustainable squad. With Presnel Kimpembe returning from injury and Milan Škriniar entering his 30s, Zabarnyi is expected to play a key role in both domestic and European competitions.

This transfer not only strengthens PSG defensively, but also reinforces their ambition to compete at the highest level in the UEFA Champions League.
